Winter is quickly becoming a distant memory, and we’re finally setting our eyes on summer fun. It’s the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. Whether you’re outside working, lounging or playing, here are some simple tips to keep safe this summer while enjoying the beautiful sunshine.
- Use sunscreen that is at least SPF 15 or higher. Also be sure that the sunscreen provides both UVA and UVB protection. Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or toweling off.
- Wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound sunglasses are best.
- Stay in the shade, especially during midday hours when the sun is the strongest.
- Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your face and neck.
- Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water while out in the sun.
- Watch for signs of heat stroke such as hot, red skin, rapid or weak pulse, shallow breathing, nausea, and changes in consciousness. If you suspect heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately and be sure to take the person indoors or to a shaded area to lie down, place cool wet towels on their skin to lower their core temperature, and frequently mist them with water.
- Follow local weather conditions to ensure there are no storms in the area.
- Avoid alcohol while swimming.
- Swim with a buddy.
- Keep a close eye on children, even in shallow water. Waves can cause a child (or even adult) to lose their footing and get swept under the water.
- Never dive headfirst into water. If you can’t see the bottom, you can’t judge the water’s depth and you won’t see if there are any objects under the water’s surface that could injure you.
- Beware of rip currents in water with breaking waves. If you get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current and then proceed to swim to shore.
- Swim at least 100 feet or more away from jetties and piers. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures.
- Be conscious of your surroundings. Motorcycles and other summer vehicles (such as small collector cars and motorcycle/vehicle hybrids) can be difficult to see.
- Always check all mirrors and use your blinkers before changing lanes. This will help those motorists around you understand your intentions which will minimize unnecessary accidents.
- Drive sober. If you have a few drinks at a picnic or beach party, find someone to drive you home.
- Beware of road construction. Most road work is done during the warm weather months, and most highway projects are conducted overnight. Drive at least 20 mph below the speed limit through these areas.
