Earlier this year, my company offered a presentation about Jon Gordon’s book One Word That Will Change Your Life. The basic idea of the book is to choose one word to focus on as your driving force for the year. Instead of making a New Year’s Resolution (that no one seems to keep anyway) you choose a word to live.

Sounds pretty amazing, right? I attended the presentation, but admit I was a skeptic at first. Fast forward to now – I have found that over the last couple of months, I have been thinking about my one word a lot.

The word I selected for myself is “grace.” My definition of grace is thoughtfulness, consideration for others, and unmerited kindness. I wanted to be a more thoughtful person and care about others. Even if people mistreat me, I want to always extend them grace. Reflecting back over the last months, I think I have grown a lot in this regard. If I am mistreated and my immediate reaction is to respond in a like manner, my mind flickers back to my word and I calm down. It has become a personal goal to exude grace and fully encompass the meaning of the word. I’m not perfect and I’m far from achieving this goal, but it is something I aspire to do. Working in customer service, this is a great goal to have. After all, the old English proverb says, “you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.”

I genuinely believe in the power of Jon Gordon’s “One Word.” I think it simplifies your goals. Since we are in the last quarter of the year, I’m already thinking about what my word will be for 2018. Do you believe in the power of “One Word?” Feel free to share your word below!
