Move It!

We have all heard of the studies regarding how sitting for long periods of time can have adverse effects on our health. The statistics can be alarming! However, there is no need to panic. Those same studies have revealed that there are simple things you can do while at work to help maintain your health and fitness.  Following these tips will help you feel better at work and when your day is over too.

Get Moving.   I know many people who utilize their breaks to improve their fitness by walking indoors or outdoors, at home and at work. This has the added benefits of reducing muscle tension, improving circulation, reducing anxiety and stress, and improving mental alertness. However, not all movement has to take place during break time! A walk to the copier, getting a drink of water, or even just adjusting your sitting position can help. Remember to always check with your doctor before beginning a fitness exercise program.

Stretch!  The simplest of all physical activities is a stretch.  It is the perfect answer for long periods of inactivity and  sitting at the computer.  For example, place your palms together and press one hand backwards with the other. Change hands.  Another example – sit relaxed with your feet flat on the floor. Imagine a cable attached to the top of your head pulling you up. Remember to stretch until you feel a slight mild tension and hold for 5-10 seconds. If the tension increases or becomes painful, discontinue the exercise.

Many of us do some work from home or while sitting in an airport.  It’s even more important to remember these tips during work time outside of the office since our home office and an airport lounge are usually not “ergonomically” perfect.

Ultimately, remaining active – even while in an office environment – has many work and personal rewards.   I’d like to hear about what you do to stay fit and comfortable throughout your work day.
