As we head into the heat of summer, recent college graduates are excited for the next chapter of their lives. There’s a world of opportunity and many may still feel unsure what profession would be the right fit for them. As a newly minted graduate myself 10 years ago, I had no idea what to do next. I stumbled upon insurance while scrolling through some job boards. The only thing I knew about insurance at that time, was I needed to have it and a payment came out of my checking account each month. When I look back over the past decade, I’m grateful for the opportunities that this industry has provided me and encourage recent graduates to consider a career in insurance as well.
Why choose a career in insurance?
- Stability. No matter what phase of the business cycle we’re in or how the economy is doing, insurance will always be needed. Individuals, families, and businesses need insurance to protect themselves and stay in operation. Insurance is an important function of our everyday lives and provides a peace of mind.
- Work-Life Balance. There is an incredible amount of flexibility in this industry which allows for a well-rounded life. Hard work is rewarded not only financially, but with much needed time off for a vacation or a three-day weekend. Insurance professionals can typically control their schedules to attend family events during the week such as their children’s school and sporting events.
- Income Potential. Insurance is an industry that within the next few years will see a generation of professionals exiting the workforce due to retirement. This creates a tremendous opportunity for recent graduates to get their foot in the door of a fulfilling and challenging business. If one goes to work in an agency, you are only financially capped by the effort you put into it.
If any of these reasons pique your interest, I would strongly encourage you to explore further. I’m happy I did!
