“What do you want to be when you grow up?” A common question we all heard as children but the response was probably never “an insurance agent,” or “a claims adjuster,” or “an underwriter.” However, many will say they want to be a doctor, teacher, police officer, or in a career where they can help others and make a difference. But that is exactly what a career in the insurance industry can provide.

I started my insurance career working in the claims department where every day I had the chance to provide peace of mind and comfort to someone that could be going through the worst experience of their life. It could have been a small fender bender or even a complete house fire where they were left picking up the pieces of a life they’ve always known, just to start over again.

Now working in underwriting, I have the opportunity to help our independent agents provide the appropriate coverage for their customer’s needs. It is my job to keep our agents informed on the latest products we have to offer that will provide coverage and fill gaps for the customers. Providing these resources will ensure that when a loss occurs, our customers will have the peace of mind that they are properly covered.

An insurance agent may be the most familiar career choice when you think about insurance. As an agent, you are able to build personal relationships with customers, while getting to know and understand what their loss exposures are. From there, agents help determine how to adequately protect those exposures and make recommendations for the best coverages available to them. Agents are the face of insurance and the first point of contact for questions, concerns, and claims.

The insurance industry has so much to offer. Even as a claims adjuster, underwriter, or agent, you have the opportunity to specialize in commercial or personal insurance, and from there can even specify large commercial vs. small business, property and casualty vs. life and health insurance – the list goes on and on! While insurance may not be the first career field to come to mind, if you are looking for a path that makes a difference and helps others, look no further than the insurance industry.

  1. Keep up the good work Taylor! I understand that as a financial product, insurance policies are difficult to design and sell to customers. It is nevertheless a very important requirement, which people mostly ignore. As an insurance agent, building credibility in the market comes after long labor, which is why people consider it a thankless job. Helping others and refusing people is an equally important job in the insurance industry, which comes with numerous responsibilities.
