How to Stay on Track to Meet Your Yearly Goals

Who likes to make New Year resolutions? Who never sticks to them? We are one month into the New Year – are you still working towards your goals? Like many of you, my resolutions include living a healthier lifestyle and taking control of my finances. But in order to actually accomplish these goals, here are a few secrets I’ve learned to keep myself on track:

Live a healthier lifestyle: Who isn’t trying to be healthier? I made a resolution to work out at least three times per week, count my daily calories, and drink more water and less sugary drinks.

I found that using an app on my phone is the best way to make sure I achieve my health and fitness goals. I love using the Fitbit app and my Fitbit Versa watch because I can track my daily progress. Other apps like Samsung Health, Strava, and Fitocracy are other great fitness apps if you do not have a Fitbit. On my app, I can track my water and calorie intake, workouts, and so much more. I also get weekly and monthly progress reports, which are a great way to compare how I do on a daily basis versus a longer timeframe.

Focus on finances: Even though I am only 23 years old, it is never too early to take control of finances. I am on track to graduate with my Master’s degree in May, which means student loan payments are right around the corner.  Not to mention my husband’s student loan payments also begin around that time.

I’ve recently started listening to Dave Ramsey’s podcasts on Spotify. He is inspirational and extremely knowledgeable about handling your personal finances. Knowledge is power, and to take control of my financial situation I need to gain as much insight as possible. So bring it on student loans. I may cry when I see the first statement, but I know I will be prepared and ready to make the payments by following Ramsey’s instructions.

My advice is to find something or someone that holds you accountable and motivates you to stick to your resolutions. It can be a friend, spouse, sibling, parent, public figure, vision board, app, or journal – just stick with it! I am looking forward to seeing how the rest of my year goes, and I wish you all the best of luck with your own resolutions.
