When I applied for my position here at Central, I interviewed with our President, Bill Purmort. When I entered his office, one of the first things he said to me was: “I Googled you.” I don’t care who you are, that statement can be terrifying when you’re interviewing for a job!
Then I thought for a moment and realized that when I applied for the position, the first thing I did was Google Central Insurance Companies!
This is a perfect example of the power of the Internet and Social Media. It’s often the first impression we have of someone or something, and likely the first impression they have of you. So what does your presence on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter (or your lack of presence) say about you? If you’re not using it, start now. It’s one of the best ways to stay competitive, whether it’s in the job market or in the business world. If you are using Social Media, think carefully about why you’re using it. For most of us, it’s to build relationships. Make sure the image you’re presenting is one you can live with. It could be the deciding factor in whether or not you get that job or a new business account.
Have you Googled yourself lately? Try it and let me know what you find!
