Stack of SmartphonesChoosing the right smartphone can be an important decision. You will most likely have it with you every day for the next couple of years. Use these five tips when selecting your next smartphone to help find the one that’s right for you.

  1. Decide if a smartphone is the best option for you. Think about how you will use your phone. Do you like keeping up on the latest tweets, updates from your friends, or the latest breaking news? Instead of having a separate iPod and GPS, would you rather have it all in one handy device you can stick in your pocket or purse? If you answered yes, then a smartphone would make sense for you.
  2. Choose the right carrier. Research which cell phone company has the best coverage where you live and where you travel frequently. Cell phone carriers’ websites usually have coverage maps available. Find a carrier that has a faster 3G or 4G network available in your area. You won’t be happy with your smartphone if you can’t get a connection to the Web or if your calls are being dropped.
  3. Select a plan. If you plan on using your phone mainly for talking and texting, with only occasional e-mails or web searches, you can select a plan with less data. If you plan to be online frequently and are into downloading apps, games, and movies, you’ll probably want to select one of the more pricey plans with more data.
  4. Find the right operating system. Three of the most common operating systems for smartphones are Apple’s iOS which runs iPhones, Google’s Android system, and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. An iPhone is your best bet if you want a lot of apps to choose from. Android-powered phones are quickly making up ground where apps are concerned, and the Android operating system is available on a range of phones making it easier to find one that works well for you. A Windows mobile phone might be convenient if you plan to work on spreadsheets and documents on your phone since it runs a mobile version of Windows.
  5. Try them out. Try out different phones in the store. Is the touchscreen easy for you to use? Does it fit comfortably in your hand, as well as in your pocket or purse? Do you like the look of the phone? Also, read user reviews online to see what they are saying about the phone you are considering.

I hope these tips help you make a smart choice about your smartphone. Do you have additional tips for selecting the right smartphone?
