Catastrophes can strike anywhere and at any time.  In just the last three weeks, many areas across our nation have been impacted by the forces of Mother Nature.

  • Severe thunderstorms and accompanying high winds caused a stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair, killing seven people and injuring 43.
  • A rare East Coast 5.8 magnitude earthquake, centered in central Virginia, was felt from Georgia to Canada.  Although no deaths and very few injuries occurred from the temblor, several structures in the nation’s capital, including the Washington Monument, were damaged.
  • Hurricane Irene, which began as a powerful category three storm, caused over $10 billion in damage as it made landfall in three states with widespread flooding in New England.  Forty-six Americans lost their lives in the storm.
  • The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee spread heavy rain and flooding into many areas of the Southeast and Tennessee Valley on Labor Day.
  • In drought-stricken Texas, wildfires which have been ongoing since the spring erupted over Labor Day weekend, destroying over 1,000 homes.  Since the wildfires began, over 3.5 million acres of Texas have burned—an area equivalent to seven Texas counties!
