Happily Ever After with Loss Control

Loss Control InspectionThe first week into the New Year, I was travelling through Colorado to visit my amazing clients (can you tell I love my job!) when I received a phone call that my mother had become ill and was being transported by ambulance to a hospital in Nebraska. Most would agree this is not the type of phone call you want to receive, especially when you’re good distance from home. As a loss control professional, I have been trained to handle emergency situations but as a human being, this one hit a little too close to home.

After I got over the initial shock and reminded myself that my mom was in good hands, I proceeded to make the six-hour trip home, half of which I had to navigate through snowy conditions. “Slow and steady wins the race,” I kept telling myself. But I was at the end of a week-long trip and had a few more visits to go. Don’t get me wrong, I strongly believe family is a priority, but realistically there was nothing I could do at that point. It was then that the safety “light bulb” went on! What if one of the businesses I was scheduled to visit needed assistance recognizing a life safety measure? Is there really any way to place a value on human life? Aren’t their families, employees and visitors just as valuable as my loved ones?

Sometimes loss control professionals can be perceived as nitpickers or the safety police. But when it comes to placing a value on human life, is that really the case? What if a fire broke out in your business or on your property and the occupants could not locate a working fire extinguisher or find their way out of the building? I’m sure you can imagine the terrible possibilities. Wouldn’t it be better to experience “happily ever after” instead? That’s one reason why a loss control consultant visits your business; they opt for happily ever after by assisting you with identifying and preventing risks before an accident, injury, or property damage occurs.

And don’t worry, my mother is also experiencing her own happily ever after; she’s home from the hospital and on her way to recovery.

I encourage you not to wait for a loss control visit – or worse, an emergency situation – to improve the safety measures at your business or workplace. Be sure to reach out to your independent agent for more information on utilizing loss control services. It’s the perfect opportunity to be proactive and show your employees and customers that you also strive for your story to end happily!

Has your loss control consultant helped you in achieving happily ever after? I’d love to hear your story below in the comments!
