I spent my entire childhood dreaming of one day becoming an attorney. I worked towards this goal all through high school and even entered college with the same dream. It wasn’t until my junior year in college when I took my first law class and realized I absolutely hated it. I panicked not knowing what I was going to do with my life anymore and called my mom. She told me I needed to first calm down, and then decide what parts of my classes I did like, and what parts I did not like.

I realized I liked critical thinking and risk management. I enjoyed the open discussions and relationship building that came with being a political science major. In my final years of school, I tried to find a career that had these aspects and started asking around to family and friends for advice. My grandmother told me about my grandfather’s job in an insurance agency and she encouraged me to look into a similar career path. The more I looked into the insurance industry, the more I found it had everything I was looking for.

With my career in insurance as a Personal Lines Underwriter, I am able to do all of the things I enjoyed in college. I spend my days evaluating the risks to determine how they fit with the companies guidelines. I am also building great relationships with all of my agents and having open discussions to better understand the accounts being submitted to me. As soon as I decided insurance was the right career path for me, everything else fell into place.
