On my way to work, I used to drive past an open lot which contained a large pile of construction debris – mostly broken pieces of concrete and bricks. And sitting in front of that pile of debris was a very large sign advising “THEIVES NOT WELCOME!” Childishly handwritten and misspelled, it did not appear very threatening. In fact, with no obvious signs of security around the property, it seemed more likely to invite a curious thief to see if there might be something of value hidden in that pile.

With social media changing the way we participate in the world, there are things that must be addressed in this new age. People seem to think that posting something on Facebook is similar to telling a few friends a funny story, your plans for the weekend, or venting about a frustrating incident. This could not be farther from the truth. It is more like publishing these things in a newspaper for all to read.

I receive e-mails periodically from industry sources that share information on various insurance topics. One thing that’s certain is that communication has changed since I entered the industry. From the not-so-green printed manuals to Facebook and digital newsletters, information flows fast and furious with no end in sight.

Have you thought about what will happen if the United States Postal Service continues to reduce their services? How will you be impacted if they cut out Saturday delivery? Does your life get put on hold because they decrease service? I’m not going to sit around and wait for them. The answer lies in electronic and paperless options available today. Many companies and individuals are already taking advantage of electronic commerce, along with the cost savings they offer.
