My community experienced an F4 tornado on November 10, 2002. Unfortunately there were two deaths in the community but there could have been many more. The local cinema was full of people out for a movie on a Sunday afternoon. Cinema employees moved everyone to the safest part of the building when the warning alarms were sounded.

Volunteering for a cause or organization that you believe in can be one of the most rewarding and fun things in life. My first volunteer “opportunity” came when an organization approached my boss looking for help. It wasn’t going to work for her to help so she asked me if I would be willing to give up a few lunch hours and join the group. I have trouble saying no, plus it sounded interesting so I agreed. The group was planning a brand new annual event involving many worthwhile organizations in the community. While I was only a small part of the event’s success, I’m proud to say that the event marked it’s 13th anniversary earlier this month.

You probably agree with the statement “Time is money.” Yet many times when it comes to our people we waste time AND money by shortchanging their training. A manager once said to me “We don’t have time to train!” I took this discussion as an opportunity to help the manager see that training our people is a critical investment we must make to SAVE time and money.
